Don’t Confuse Tour Guys with The Tour Guy

Updated: Oct 7

Tour Guys in Toronto gets confused with other companies. Don't worry, we got you.

It happens... People confuse Tour Guys (us, a small Canadian walking tour company) with "The Tour Guy" a tour operator in Europe. We aren't the same company. Likewise, we get confused with other tour companies in our market or in others who share a similar name. So, here's a breakdown of the lookalikes, soundalikes, and similar businesses we bump into and how we are different!

Tour Guys was founded in 2009. We started with operations in both Toronto and Vancouver, but today we focus solely on Toronto. We were the first company in Canada to operate the "free tour" model, inspired by our experiences in Europe (shout out to Sandeman's and our friends at Free Tours by Foot).

We offer a variety of tours, including graffiti tours, food tours, school programs, and history walks. Our guides live here, know the city inside out, and share stories with humor and empathy. We take pride in being independent and Canadian—not a franchise or a reseller.

Since 2010, we have also been the Toronto operator of Urban Adventures for Intrepid Travel, a leading adventure travel brand that supports local businesses worldwide.

For those interested in Vancouver, we recommend Vancouver DeTours. This company is run by Ali Butcher, who purchased the Vancouver side of Tour Guys from co-founder Steve Woodall as he exited to pursue other work and rebranded it around 2020.

The Tour Guy (formerly The Roman Guy)

Don't confuse Tour Guys with The Tour Guy. The Roman Guy was founded in Rome in 2008. In 2019, it rebranded as The Tour Guy when the company expanded into Paris, Florence, Barcelona, and other European cities. The Tour Guy is best known for "skip the line" Vatican and museum tours.

However, they do not operate in Toronto or any other Canadian city. We have never operated outside of Canada.

Fun fact: Tour Guys in Canada existed before The Roman Guy changed its name to The Tour Guy.

Toonie Tours

Toonie Tours launched in Vancouver in 2018 and later expanded into Toronto and other Canadian cities. They opened in direct competition with us and have mirrored much of our model. They use the same booking platform, sell "free tours" like us, and charge the same booking fee (their tours aren't actually free either). In many ways, they have used us as a blueprint for where their tours go and what they cover.

Other Companies Using the Name “Tour Guys”

There are several other businesses worldwide using variations of the name Tour Guys.

They are NOT connected to us:

  • ToursGuys in Dubai: Founded in 2010. Offers desert safaris and city tours with in-tour photography.

  • Nola Tour Guy in New Orleans: Worker-owned and locally operated since around 2011–2012. Offers pay-what-you-feel tours of the French Quarter, Garden District, and cemeteries.

  • Halifax Tour Guys in Nova Scotia: Facebook records show they started in 2014. They run private scenic tours to Halifax highlights, Peggy’s Cove, and Lunenburg.

  • Plus typo-based or cloned names like Tours Guys or Tour Guyz that mostly exist as booking funnels or redirects.

Why This Matters

You do not want to end up on a tour you did not intend to book. Each company has its own focus. They may be fine in their lane, but if you want Toronto street art, bacon and butter tarts, or a genuine look at Toronto’s history, you want the original Tour Guys.

We often receive calls and emails from customers who mistakenly booked a tour in Europe with The Tour Guy or in Dubai with ToursGuys. They reach us in Toronto thinking we are the same company. When we tell them they have the wrong number, they sometimes think we are lying. If travelers are this confused, it’s easy to see why search engines and AI systems are confused too.

Final Word

When we founded Tour Guys in 2009, we did our due diligence. We chose a name that was unique in the industry, clear, and memorable. We wish others had done the same. The copycat names have only made it more confusing for everyone—travelers, companies, and even AI search engines.

There is only one Tour Guys in Toronto. The others are in Europe, Dubai, New Orleans, Halifax, or built off our blueprint. And if you are in Vancouver, look up Ali at Vancouver DeTours.
